How To Use Sign Language For Babies

by GuestPoster on January 19, 2012

Creative Commons License photo credit: Hindrik SSometimes it can be really hard to communicate with babies. When they read a certain age there can be many moments where we are just longing to figure out what it is that they want or what it is that will make them stop crying. Trying to satisfy a crying baby can be very hard and frustrating especially if you feel you try everything and in the end it was just the little green dinosaur in the corner that was causing all the trouble. Wouldn’t it be great if you just knew what your baby wanted?

Before the spoken language is developed you need to rely on your other senses in order to communicate with your baby. However, many people have success using sign language for babies. This refers to a system where your baby learns a set of signs that you use to communicate. In the beginning, you might start out with few simple signs for eating, drinking, sleeping and diaper changing. Later on, when your baby has learned to master the initial signs, you might add more complicated signs to communicate about toys, other people, games, types of food and so on.

Using sign language for babies can be very rewarding for both parent and baby. It stimulates the baby in the ability to communicate and it will be helpful when it is time to learn the spoken language, as the baby is already used to two way communication. It is also very beneficial for a baby to be able to use expressions as it can be very frustrating not to be understood well. Using sign language for babies you can avoid many frustrating situations where you don’t know what your baby wants or needs.

You can start using sign language as early as 9 or 10 months of age and you will use it until around 2 or 2,5 years of age where the spoken language is fully developed.

Types of Breast Pumps

by GuestPoster on January 12, 2012

Hanalei and her breast pump
Creative Commons License photo credit: Wayan VotaBreastfeeding is a wonderful moment in the life of a mother and something that only women can experience, but at the same time this activity can bring new challenges to our lives, especially in this busy world we live in.  Mothers often find they don’t have any time to rest or to work, and other times they have to spend time outside where they can’t freely breast feed. Luckily, today we can count with the help of breast pumps, convenient tools that allow us to pump out milk for later use.

Breast pumps have become the best friend of busy moms, as they can save you a lot of time and share the feeding of the baby with the dad.

Currently we can find two different breast pumps.  The first ones are the manual breast pumps, they are very easy to use and very affordable, and you can easily find them in supermarkets across the World.  These pumps are designed for moms who just want to use them from time to time. As a daily tool they can be tiresome and produce irritation, but on the other hand they are easy to transport.

The second type of breast pumps are the electrical ones.  These are more recent, and basically you can leave all the pump action in automatic.  These products come with controls that let you adjust the frequency of the pump and the force it uses, so it is just a matter of adjusting it correctly until we feel comfortable.  These pumps are much more expensive than manual ones, so it is a good idea to take a look at 2011 breast pump reviews before deciding on a product. Additionally, they may come with a bag for easy and discreet transport.

What is the breast pump between these two? If we are talking about the amount of milk, electric breast pumps take the price.  But as a mother we know that this oftentimes depends more on personal comfort than on other factors.

3 Ways to Manage Child Misbehavior

by GuestPoster on January 4, 2012

don't mess with me!
Creative Commons License photo credit: bluecinderellaChild discipline is a topic that psychologists have addressed for decades. Because children have a natural inclination to be free spirits, child discipline can become an issue if it isn’t handled appropriately. Especially if a child is misbehaving, instilling discipline can become a source of frustration for a parent. So, how do you handle a child who is misbehaving and what are the primary methods you can use to make sure child discipline is enforced with success?

#1 – Don’t React to a Misbehaving Child

There are three ways you can maintain discipline in your household that will keep the peace and cause children to behave in a more positive way. One of the ways to enforce child discipline is to not let your child’s poor behavior provoke you. That means you need to ignore your child’s behavior if he is acting poorly or not react to it. However, you don’t want to ignore him if he is behaving correctly.

Purposely ignoring poor behavior or not giving it much weight is important if you don’t want your child to repeat his actions. Therefore, withhold attention when he is behaving inappropriately. For example, if he says a bad word, don’t react. Instead, calmly tell him that the language he is using is not permitted in your house. Don’t give him free rein by giving him a response. He’s not going to find it too fun to repeat his action if he is not getting any reaction.

#2 – Direct your Child to a More Positive Activity if He is Doing Something that Does Not Meet with your Approval

Very young children can easily become distracted. Therefore, if your toddler is acting in a way that does not meet with your approval, then it’s best to direct him to a more positive activity. While this type of solution can be challenging, it’s not impossible. Also, be sure you tell your child when you like his behavior. For example, if he is sharing his toys with his sister, don’t forget to tell him how you appreciate his behavior.

#3 – Be Firm in your Approach

Emphasizing the positive never hurts when managing child misbehavior. However, you also have to learn to be firm as well, especially if you want your child to do what you tell him. For example, if you want him to get ready for bed, you need to use a firm and direct tone. Say, “It’s time you get your PJs and get ready for bed,” versus phrasing a request, such as, “Wouldn’t it be a good idea to get ready for bed now?” After all, he has to understand who the adult is who is the kid.

Learn to deal with child discipline problems so things don’t get out of hand. That way you can avoid behavioral problems, many which result when a parent becomes angry about their child’s actions. Instead of yelling, tell your child, if his behavior bothers you, that you are tired and that he needs, for instance, to be quieter. Either he will refrain from the activity or go somewhere else and play. Keep things on a positive note and learn to be firm. And, don’t react to your child when he is attempting to seek attention in a negative way.

For more tips and advice on how to discipline  a child properly, take a look at this total transformation review which details my results and experiences of using a child discipline program formulated by child behavioral psychologists.

The Different Roles of a Mother

by GuestPoster on January 2, 2012

Leftovers
Creative Commons License photo credit: ocherdracoAre you also a mom? Do you understand your mother’s behavior? Do you realize how mothers’ handle their anxiety and depression when their kids are around? Do you realize how hard it is for them to serve her family, finding a treatment for anxiety? Are you happy with the way she is taking care of you? Well, if you keep going on comprehending this page of editorial, you will have the retorts about your worries. After you have read this informative page, understanding your mother’s ways and means wouldn’t be hard for you at all.

Nowadays, children cannot comprehend about their mother’s attitude toward their behavior, and decisions. Not everyone knows how hard it is to be a mother; because you have one must balance her relationship to everyone, and guide them at the same time. People may think that mothers are stricter than the fathers, but there is no real objective for this, as both only want the best for their children. It is not always easy to be a mother, and you may think that all they have to do is cook, and serve dinner for their family, but that’s just not it. Mother’s have a big role in their children and husband’s lives, as a Father have a difficult thing to attend to, like work. Our Mother’s have different roles in our life, and in a family. So, what are the different roles of our mothers?

First is that they have to be a confidant or a friend for her children and husband, which should make her ready to listen to her families problem all the time. This is not easy, because they have to be aware of what they should say, and what they should not say to their children, especially to their daughters.

Second is that they must be a good wife, and a partner. Once you get married, it means that you are going to have a family, and it includes being a good partner and understands your husband’s behavior, and decisions. A mother and a wife should know how to accept, and discard the bad choices.

Lastly is that she should be a home caretaker, which means that she have to prepare the whole families food, clothes, and even drive the kids to school.

Some may think that being a mom is an easy task, but its not that easy, especially if the family is big.

NUCOA MARGARINE
Creative Commons License photo credit: George Eastman HouseGreen smoothies are becoming more and more popular, and even if you haven’t tried them yet, you may have heard about them and may be curious what the craze is all about.

Well, green smoothies are great because they make healthy nutrition really easy. The are a great way to give your kids a little boost of nutrition and energy. Most of us have trouble eating sufficient amounts of fresh fruits and greens on a daily basis; and if you have kids you know how hard it can be to have them eat a cup of spinach or kale. Not any more!

If you blend some sweet fruit with a cup of greens and a bit of water, the resulting green smoothie is a delicious way to consume those greens without your kids even noticing the “green” taste. In my experience, children love green smoothies, even if they regularly refuse to eat anything of green color on their plate. After initial resistance, they will quickly become addicted (in a good way) to drinking them or eating them as frozen desserts (if you choose to make them into popsicles).

How to introduce green smoothies to your kids?

There are many great smoothie recipes for kids. Start with a simple basic recipe, using a lot of sweet fruits and adding only a little bit of spinach (it’s the mildest tasting green).  If your kids really like sweet taste, you may add a little bit of honey, agave syrup or other natural sweetener.  Later on you can start experimenting. Try adding various fruits and greens, and adjusting quantities to your liking.

All sweet fruits taste delicious in smoothies, just make sure that they are ripe. As far as greens, all leafy greens can be used in smoothies, but there are some points to remember.  First of all, some greens are really strong tasting, so add only small amounts initially. I love the taste of arugula or cilantro, and my seven-year-old loves them too, but you may want to start slowly.  Second thing to keep in mind – and this is really important if you want your green smoothies to be a success -  is that some of these greens are really tough, so you will need to invest in the best blender for making smoothies that you can afford (Vitamix 5200 is the top choice in my opinion, with Blendtec being also a great smoothie machine) to make them really extra smooth – otherwise your child may simply refuse to drink them.

Here is a basic Strawberry-Banana-Spinach Smoothie recipe to get you started:

2 bananas
1 cup of strawberries, fresh or frozen; if fresh, you can leave the stems on – these are greens too!
1 handful of spinach leaves (or other greens)
1 cup of water

It’s important to rotate the greens that you use. Don’t stick to spinach all the time! I use kale, collard greens, arugula, parsley, cilantro, lettuce, celery tops, and anything else that I can find.

Also, don’t be afraid you “spoil” your smoothie – I have never made a smoothie that tasted too bad to drink. Worst comes to worse, you can add a banana or other sweet fruit to make the smoothie sweeter.
